Hi John, thank you, another fabulous list with some familiar friends and new-to-me songs.

Human Kind: I didn’t pay close attention to the lyrics, just let the song wash over me, like you’ve talked about. It feels like a song meant to be uplifting and not over-analyzed. Nice.

Wicked Game: I like this stripped down interpretation… it feels slowed down though the lap guitar adds incredible layers of sound, sometimes like guitar, others like synth. This is maybe not off-beat enough to be in a Lynch work, but it comes from that same mysterious corner of the universe.

Lauren Mayberry had an Avril Lavigne kind of sound, except more indie. I liked it. Like it, Little Barrie’s song was new to me and I liked the light bluesy riff of it.

I enjoyed the Calexico cover of “Alone Again Or.” I’ll bet vdzanden would enjoy receiving this one, him having written up the Damneds’ version on my blog the week before last.

I wasn’t sure about Enigma’s track as it began though as it started to settle in it seemed like there is a bit of a “Kashmir” vibe (maybe it’s a similarity in the drum pattern). The chanting in the song brings something else to mind that I can’t identify at the moment. The synths complete the picture. It's a beautiful uplift to end the set.

You already know what I think of the Hawkwind, Still Corners and Imagination Machine songs (though I have to say how beautiful Awakening is, and can’t believe not every single person on Earth isn’t playing it). And maybe we’ve been in the Marsden chat while "Doot Doot" played… I like the sonic landscape of this version and am not sure if it’s the mix I recognize from the show.

I find your lists, in addition to the flow we’ve discussed before, also feel to me like a conversation carried back and forth, both with the songs we mutually share but also the new-to-us ones. That’s what it’s all about, I think, as we continue to share stuff we like.

Thanks Steve. I can always count on you to bring thoughtful discourse to my comments section and it is always very much appreciated. Marsden and the chatroom is definitely rubbing off on me. Totally agree on Awakening. I'm pretty sure that version of Doot Doot is one that David recently played, although I did listen to a few different versions before selecting the one i did for this list, so I can't be sure. Sometimes I think of Johnny Clegg and Savuka (Scatterlings of Africa) when I am listening to that track by Enigma. The Human Kind video has the lyrics built right in so you may want to watch the video again just for that. Very simple and very powerful. That's a great album by the way. I will definitely be featuring him again. I'm feeling a definite pull towards Canadiana at the moment. Catch you tonight in the chat room. I thought last nights show was a bit weak, but Jive more than made up for it.

My pleasure, John, always nice to sit with a song and share some of what comes up. A few repeats from DM last night but Jive was really hitting all the right notes. I'll probably be late to the show tonight but hope to catch you there.

Great mix John... I especially like the Wicked Game cover... I have a few Chris Isaak CD's in storage somewhere, one of which is this one.

Hi John and Thank You. Sorry I missed your comment. I'd almost forgotten about my CD collection, but pulled it out about a week ago to have a look. A few surprises in there. Chris Isaak's Wicked Game is in there. My current iMac doesn't even have a CD player. Have to play them on my 2003 'igloo' iMac. No CD player in the car anymore either.

It sure does….plus they had me at Lapsteel lol. There are not many of us but what a sound they make. I started paying attention and nearly every song that I love has some sort of slide or lap steel component. I also don’t play country. I think a lap still works with every genre of music. Larkin and Paul have maximize this.

It's certainly a distinct sound. I think classification of songs is kind of outdated, but I see why commercial radio still insists on it. Larkin Poe is made up of sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. They have some great original material as well. They have covered many, many classics.
