I've known "How Soon Is Now" forever without knowing the track title. Huh. Loved the Hothouse Flowers song, and the Jude Flannery number (which I shared recently on my blog, too). The Lumineers song was a bit on the weak side but maybe it was partly because of the live recording, as I typically enjoy theirs.

Hi Steve. Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Yes, it was you that introduced me to Jude Flannery so thank you for that.

That's funny about How Soon is Now. There are a lot of tracks like that, aren't there. A little obscure and not something you can pick out from the lyrics. I know it from when it was in heavy rotation on NY, considered one of their top songs of all time, at least back in the day.

I agree with your assessment of the Lumineers track, the mixing is not the best, the voice is weak and the violin is almost non-existent, but because I rely so heavily on YouTube videos for this blog, I sometimes have to choose between lesser versions. The original video for Life in the City is fantastic, but I find it too depressing to watch. I sometimes use a lyric video or an album art with the original soundtrack or as I did, find a fairly clean concert video.

I love watching live performances when they are available. The best recordings tend to be live in-studio tracks where the mixing is usually top notch, but alas, couldn't find any for this piece. Sometimes, you'll get interesting concert footage overlayed with original music, like the Fugazi track which can be a nice compromise. The break at the beginning of that song is epic and somehow I totally missed it when it was new. I only came across it by accident a year or two ago.

Choosing videos can be hit or miss. Although someone has done a half decent job or doctoring Who film footage together for Magic Bus, it doesn't cut it to take one of the best live performances in Rock history and splice unrelated concert footage with it. Better to stick with album art in that case. To the best of my knowledge, there is sadly no footage to go with it.

Ah, you're welcome for that, John... glad to share such a great song!

Indeed, the sound quality on videos can vary greatly. For The Alarm's "Rain in the Summertime" which I posted the other day, there's the official video which I used as I thought it was an interesting video from the era, but another audio-only video had far better sound reproduction and mixing. Occasionally I'll post both, but there has to be something pretty spectacular about one or the other to do that to readers.

I'm pretty reliant on YouTube as well in my format, though in a pinch can go with SoundCloud, though aesthetically, that wouldn't work well for your layouts (which always look pleasing to the eye, by the way). And like you (and my sweety) I enjoy live performance videos; some even have good sound, or like you say, occasionally they're paired with the studio recording.

Always so much out there to enjoy -- and to share!
